Historic Hintonburg main-street area

Between Parkdale and the O-Train tracks, Wellington Street West is a classic urban commercial street from the age before cars ruled the world. Stores are smaller and closer together, and merchants are interspersed with public buildings, squares and parks.

The area features a number of important historical buildings, including a beautiful old silver-spired cathedral, a number of grand church buildings, and many classic stone and brick commercial buildings from the 1800’s and early 20th century.

The Hintonburg main-street area features:

  • Eclectic businesses - new and old: a coffee-and-bicycle shop, Ottawa’s largest Apple computer dealer (built in a former Bingo Hall), and a high end doggie store, to name only a few.
  • Fashion and salons: Ottawa’s premiere shirtmaker, tuxedo and wedding stores, plus a number of cutting edge salons and spas.
  • Multicultural restaurants: ranging from Vietnamese and Japanese to African, Indian, South American, and Middle Eastern.
  • A bargain-hunter’s paradise: with one of Ottawa’s oldest Giant Tiger stores, plus second-hand stores selling furniture, CDs, clothes, and recycled computers.
  • A strong community: the Hintonburg Community Association is widely know as one of the most organized and passionate grassroots organizations in Ottawa.
  • Community services: like the Hintonburg Community Centre, Rosemount Library, the Ottawa Carleton Immigrant Services Organization (OCISO), and many more.
