Flowers Fit for The Queen!

Posted on: 7/8/2010 7:08:03 PM

Kudos to Machiko Ikewara, local florist and owner of  Ottawa Blooms - Haiku Poetry in Flowers who had the honour and pleasure of creating a bouquet for Queen Elizabeth during her recent stay in Ottawa. The Queen carried her bouquet of white roses and pale yellow and purple orchid blossoms during the unveiling of jazz musician Oscar Peterson's statue at the National Arts Centre on June 30, 2010.

And this isn't even the first time! Machiko created a floral bouquet for the Queen the last time she visited Ottawa. Machiko laughs, "I sure have great customers!"

The robins and the road crews are back!

Posted on: 4/23/2010 3:22:58 PM

Have you noticed? The robins and the road crews are back! Here’s an update on this Spring’s construction projects:

Phase 2, Wellington St W, Parkdale east to Garland: Installation of the last blocks of sidewalk paving stones has recommenced by St François D’Assise church.  Crews will continue heading east to meet up with the start of the last phase of construction (Spadina Ave to Somerset Bridge, and then over to Preston) this summer. The City has just tendered this project so we don’t have a start date yet, but anticipate it will begin mid-June.

Wellington St W will remain open. A last layer of asphalt will be poured mid-summer. Hooray for the new street trees! Garbage bins and benches will be coming in May.

Parkdale Market: Crews are busy installing this year’s temporary market stalls at the Parkdale Market. The old steel structure was removed last Fall and a new permanent structure will be constructed in 2011. In the meantime, a rental frame and canopy will enable market vendors to return and set up shop for this season. Check out the wider sidewalks, new street trees and lampposts in front of the market on Parkdale Ave. We can’t see all the improvements underground but apparently all is good for the foreseeable future.

The Parkdale Market’s Opening Date will be, as always, on Mother’s Day weekend (May 8 and 9)!

Parkdale Park: Closed due to reconstruction of the field house, public washrooms, wading pool, etc. until mid-July.

Scott St: Roadwork is on schedule to be completed by June 30th. The majority of the construction and all the really heavy stuff is already finished. They hope to pave the road on April 26, 2010, weather permitting. Traffic will not be affected.

Phase 3: See above. No confirmed start date as yet.

More updates to come, thanks for checking in!

That's What Makes Us Great!

Congratulations to Ottawa's own legendary country-rock band, The Cooper Brothers, on their new video, "That's What Makes Us Great," shot on location at our very own Elmdale Tavern!

The Cooper Brothers are wearing labels Rockmount Ranchwear, Scully, and Rock Steady, provided by FABGEAR 64 across the street at 1109 Wellington St West. http://www.fabgear.ca

They're headed for a Juno with this new single, and they look fabulous too!

The Elmdale House Tavern was established in 1934 and is one of Ottawa's few remaining original Taverns right in the heart of our community. Located at 1084 Wellington St West. See the online calendar for live music!
